Why a second conference on Jewish Medical Ethics in Switzerland?
In 2008, Switzerland hosted a unique and important conference dealing with a variety of ethical and legal issues related to the beginning and end of life. This extremely well attended conference was an incentive for the organizing committee to launch a second conference in 2010 focusing on Mental Health in light of Jewish Medical Ethics entitled "Human Mind in Crisis".
In the world today professionals are being faced with increasingly complicated issues related to infertility, depression, addiction and many more which in turn will raise inevitably major challenges for doctors, rabbis and ethicists alike. The aim of the conference is to present newest research data on these topics by some of the key figures in those fields while analysing the related ethical concepts in the light of Jewish Medical Ethics. Jewish Medical Ethics follows a tradition that spans centuries - its impact reaching far beyond the Jewish world.
We are proud to announce that some of the speakers will include world renowned lecturers and authors in science and medical ethics such as Prof. Dr. med. Wolf Langewitz (Head of Psychosomatic Medicine, University Hospital Basel) as well as leading personalities in the field of Psychiatry such as Prof. Dr. med. Wulf Rössler (Head of Clinical and Social Psychiatry, University Hospital Zurich) and Prof. Dr. David Pelcovits (New York) and Jewish Medical Ethics, including Rabbi Prof. Abraham Steinberg (Professor of Jewish Medical Ethics and Paediatric Neurology, Hebrew University, Jerusalem and Israel Prize laureate 1999).
Looking back at what turned out to be a unique experience for all who attended the 1st International Conference on Jewish Medical Ethics in Switzerland, we intend to build on these memorable and fascinating moments this time at the Hotel Stoos, against the backdrop of the magnificent scenery of Lake Lucerne. We will be serving a bouquet of fascinating lectures on topics such as Crises in early Childhood and Adolescence, Crises in Adulthood, Elderly Mental Health as well as Prevention in Jewish Law. As in 2008, we expect not only rabbis and medical doctors but also dentists, pharmacists, therapists, midwives, nurses, biologists, ethicists and interested laymen to join us at this important conference.
